Bletilla striata? Big Bob is a hardy Asian ground orchid. This is by far one of the easiest orchids to grow in the north. Hardy to zone 5 -9 this orchids grows paddle like leaves that look a bit like palm seedlings around 1 to 2 feet tall. In late spring a show of lavender flowers emerge on the ends of small stems. These orchids are easy and beautiful and prefer to grown in part sun to shade. I treat them like iris for shaded areas. Planted in rough woodland soil and left alone yearly? they do wonderful with out any effort.? Plants sold in 4 to 4 1/2 inch pots.
